5 tips for dealing with back to school anxiety
Do you recall the last day of summer? The final Sunday before a new school year begins? I used to feel so nervous and tense the night before. Will my buddies still be around? Will I embarrass myself in front of the entire school if I have to sit alone during lunch? Even the most popular kid at school went through this; we all did. Your child is no different. With back to school season well and truly here, it's common for your child to feel anxious. Children might face difficulties separating from their parents and become more reserved than usual due to not being in school for a long time.
So if you are aware of the emotions your little one is experiencing, but you are unsure of how to support them at this time. Don't worry; it's difficult and occasionally overwhelming to see your child upset as a parent. We are aware of your predicament and are here to try to reduce the stress. Keep reading to learn more!
Reassurance goes a long way
You can ease their concerns and offer assurance as a parent. Make your youngster feel heard by paying attention to their worries. Reassure them that while returning to school can be challenging, they will soon grow to appreciate it. Be present for them; being around will help them relax. Hug them, hold their hands - this will increase their sense of security.
Outdoor activities
There is a major underappreciation of the value of being outside. The fresh air and the child connecting with nature is a form of therapy on its own. Give your child the space to run, jump, climb and use up their energy. This is a great opportunity for them to make new friends, to break out of their shells and socialise. You can also plan playdates at the park with one or more familiar faces to ease their transition back to school life.
Routine
Getting back into routine can be slightly challenging so it’s advisable to begin a week prior to the start of the new academic year. Set a realistic bedtime and decide on a reasonable wake-up time. This will help your child feel more prepared to ease back into school life. They won't be low on energy during the day at school if they get a proper night’s sleep.
Back to school shopping
They will feel more upbeat and enthusiastic about returning to school if you take them back-to-school shopping and help them prepare for the upcoming academic year. Let them purchase their preferred sharpie or the pink scented highlighter. Having stylish stationery may get your child thrilled about returning to school and possibly showing off their big selection of highlighters. This will also give them a sense of normality.
Creativity and play
Let them be creative and encourage uniqueness. Every child is different, there is no one box that an individual can fit into. Encourage your child to be creative be it in the form of painting, journaling, singing or dancing. This is their opportunity to express their emotions and to share their thoughts when words might fail them.
