DIY World Book Day costume gone wrong

It’s the 5th of March, two days until World Book Day and as I pick up my son from nursery, (which he attends part-time), his teachers tells me:

“Since he won’t be here on Thursday, he can do World Book Day tomorrow instead. We can’t wait to see his costume!”

You could argue that expecting to pull together a costume the night before is way too last minute, but for me, it was right on time. Now though, I had much less time to think of something and pull it together. My son was very helpful though, he very clearly explained that he would like to be The Gruffalo, and proceeded to narrate the part of the book that describes what he looks like:

“A creature with terrible claws, and terrible tusks in its terrible jaws, and knobbly knees and turned-out toes, and a poisonous wart at the end of its nose.”

My task was set, it was clear, and the due date was fast approaching. So once the kids were asleep, it was DIY costume making time.

To be perfectly honest, I was rather pleased with the results.

The next morning, I excitedly presented my creation. The response was, well, underwhelming. My son told me the costume was too scary and he was not going to be wearing it.

Back at square one. I luckily had an old tiger onesie at the back of a cupboard and he thankfully accepted to wear that.

It felt like a crazy 24hrs, but in hindsight, it was a bit of fun that we parents over dramatise and put way too much pressure on ourselves for.

So here’s a little recap of my days leading to the real World Book day. I hope you’ve all had a wonderful celebration and didn’t put too much pressure on yourselves!
